Our Flock – Katahdin Hair Sheep

Having discovered a need to raise livestock and being introduced to the wonderful taste of a good lamb, we established our flock of Katahdin Hair Sheep in 2001. The Katahdin Hair Sheep originated in the hills of Maine when Michel Piel imported hair sheep from the Caribbean and began an experimental breeding program using the Virgin Island sheep and various British woolen breeds. After 20 years of selective breeding/culling Mr. Piel had a flock of ewes which he named Katahdins after Mt. Katahdin in Maine.

Thanks to his efforts and the efforts of conscientious breeders that came after him, today the Katahdin is a breed whose "time has come". I cannot say enough good things about this breed. Medium sized, docile, FERTILE, NO SHEARING or DOCKING, PARASITE RESISTANT, great pasture breeders and very easy keepers even for a former city gal. Did I mention that the meat is LEAN, meaty and delicious with a very mild flavor? If you are interested in learning more about this great breed stop by the Katahdin Hair Sheep International website (see our links), or contact me at lori.french@nemahahill.com.

Our flock consists of 20 ewes and a couple select rams that have tested either RR or QR on Codon 171 testing. We have been enrolled in the Scrapie Flock Certification Program (SFCP) since 2002. All our breeding animals are at least from a twin birth with many from a triplet birth. They are pasture raised and have a minimum of worming done due to their exhibited parasite resistance. However, we will worm when needed. See our sale page for more information.
